Stair Lift Measurement Guide

Although it may seem intimidating, measuring your stairs for your new Stair Lift is a very simple and straight-forward thing. And because LiftWorks reviews your submitted measurements with your order and contacts you with any questions or concerns, you can rest assured that your new lift will fit perfectly.

Measuring Step by Step

Step 1: Select Mount Side

Looking up from the bottom of the staircase, determine the side on which the stair lift will be mounted.

LiftWorks Tip: Since the stair lift mounts to the stairs and not the wall, you may choose either side depending on your preference. When selecting the side, remember to take note of any hand rails, window sills, doorways or other non-removable obstacles that might interfere with the proper installation of your stair lift.

Step 2: Measure Length of Stairs

Using a tape measure, stand at the top of the staircase. Extend the tape measure to the bottom of the stairs allowing it to lightly touch each step until it hits the floor at the bottom of the stairs.

LiftWorks Tip: To ensure that the length of track is accurate, this measurement should be the precise length from the edge at the top of stairs to the floor at the bottom.

Step 3: Measure Rise and Tread

Measure the rise (height of a single stair) and tread (depth of a single stair) of your staircase.

LiftWorks Tip: Measure the rise with your tape measure from the "floor" of one step to the "floor" of the next step. If your stairs include a "lip" or overhang at the front of each step, measure to the top of the "lip" to the bottom of one step. Measure the tread by measuring from the front edge of the step (or "lip" if required) to the back of the step.

Step 4: Measure Stair Width

Simply measure the width of your stairs from side to side (or wall to wall).

Step 5: Note/Measure Top and Bottom Obstructions

If there are obstructions at either the top or bottom, measure from the ledge (top) or edge (bottom) to the nearest obstruction.

LiftWorks Tip: Doors, opening to hallways, fixed railings and corners are common obstructions.
